4k for honor2/19/2023 ![]() It was really the film that I realized like, ‘Oh, I want to actually do this for the rest of my life’.” I was ten years old when I played Eve, and so I think my approach to the craft and the rehearsal and the real inner work that we did with Kasi Lemmons and Samuel Jackson, I still use it now. So much of my career path has been marked by Kasi Lemmons. When Letterboxd spoke to Smollett about her new action film, Lou (on Netflix now), we asked her for some thoughts on her role in Eve’s Bayou, as audiences discover and rediscover it on its 25th anniversary: “It’s an honor. Jackson as a philandering doctor in 1960s small-town Louisiana, Lynn Whitfield as prim upper-class housewife Roz, and a young Jurnee Smollett as Eve, their middle daughter, who opens the film with the unforgettable line: “The summer I killed my father, I was ten years old.” The film’s cast is also excellent, featuring Samuel L. Its emphasis on well-drawn characters and the relationships between them-particularly the women of the Batiste family, who share the gift of second sight-gives it an emotional impact that culminates with a haunting final scene. Writer-director Kasi Lemmons’ feature debut contains elements of Gothic horror and magical realism, woven into a richly realized, non-exploitative depiction of voodoo and other forms of Creole folk magic. The 4K release will also have scattered theatrical showings in several countries.Ĭriterion’s Blu-ray offerings for October 2022 are an embarrassment of horror riches, featuring a 4K upgrade of the seminal Night of the Living Dead, the Blu-ray debut of Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona, and a 4K restoration of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure (on regular Blu-ray disc), a film that gives Se7en some serious competition as the most disturbing serial-killer movie of the ‘90s.īut we’re putting the spotlight on Criterion’s 4K restoration and Blu-ray release of Eve’s Bayou, a unique and masterfully executed blend of family melodrama and supernatural chills. Technical jargon aside, the point is that this is a film that deserves-nay, demands-to be watched in the highest definition possible. Beyond that-and it’s all accurate- Dracula is simply a sumptuous sensual experience, thanks to the costumes from Eiko Ishioka ( The Cell) and Michael Ballhaus’ ( Goodfellas) cinematography.Īnd yes, Dracula was released on 4K UHD Blu-ray in 2017, but this edition also includes Dolby Vision, which expands the dynamic color range. But, scrolling through Letterboxd, the more likely culprit seems to be the film’s intense horniness, which seeps through the pores of reviews whose writers we won’t embarrass by quoting them here. Or maybe they like the fact that it’s a more faithful adaptation of the novel. ![]() Perhaps latter-day audiences more fully appreciate the film’s Gothic horror flourishes, embraced here with a delicious sense of heightened melodrama. ![]() That helps-although it doesn’t fully account for the film’s ascent from a lavish disappointment into a “ beautifully over-the-top” piece of decadent mastercraft. Time has also been kind to Keanu Reeves, whose performance was the most widely criticized thing about the movie upon its initial release. ![]() Bram Stoker’s Dracula), Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 take on the immortal vampire classic.
